Double Victory at the Austrian International Shotokan Cup 2025: Rebels Karateclub Dominates the Kumite Category
On May 24, 2025, the Rebels Karateclub Wien made a statement at the Austrian International Shotokan Cup 2025 in St. Georgen am Attergau that will resonate in the Austrian karate scene for a long time: 1st and 2nd place in the Kumite Men Individual Open category went to our club. A double victory that impressively demonstrates the class and unwavering will to win of our athletes.
What is the Austrian International Shotokan Cup?
The Austrian International Shotokan Cup is one of the most prestigious Shotokan karate tournaments in the German-speaking world. Every year, karateka from across Austria and neighboring countries come together to compete in Kata and Kumite. The event in St. Georgen am Attergau provides a competition platform at the highest level – with experienced referees, an internationally diverse field of participants and an atmosphere that keeps the spirit of traditional Shotokan Karate alive. Anyone who stands on the podium here has prevailed against the very best.
The Road to an All-Club Final
What makes this double victory so special is not just the result itself, but the road to get there. Our two athletes Lorenz and Edvin competed in the open kumite category – a weight class with no limit, where technique, timing and mental strength decide the outcome.
From the very first fight, it was clear: the Rebels didn’t come to participate – they came to win. Every single fight on the way to the final was ended early – through clear point victories that left no room for doubt. Anyone who knows kumite understands what that means: the full fight time of two or three minutes is only not exhausted when a fighter dominates their opponent so clearly that the point difference becomes insurmountable. Both Rebels fighters achieved exactly that in every single round.
The result: an all-club final at the Austrian International Shotokan Cup. Lorenz and Edvin faced each other in the championship match – a moment that impressively reflects the team spirit and training quality of our club. In the end, Lorenz Hellmer claimed the tournament victory (1st place), while Edvin Kuric took 2nd place – a double success that fills both athletes and the entire club with pride.
Edvin Kuric: Fighter, Coach and Club President in One
Special mention goes to Edvin Kuric, who took on an extraordinary dual role at the Austrian International Shotokan Cup 2025. As club president and head coach of Rebels Karateclub Wien, he normally stands on the sidelines, analyzing opponents and giving tactical instructions. But on this Saturday in St. Georgen am Attergau, he stepped onto the mat himself – and proved that he belongs at the absolute top not only as a coach but also as an active competitor.
“A great success and the perfect motivation for upcoming tournaments.” — Edvin Kuric, Club President and Coach of Rebels Karateclub Wien
These words sound modest for someone who just stood in the final of an international Shotokan tournament. But it is precisely this combination of ambition and humility that shapes the culture of our club.
Shotokan Karate at the Highest Level: The Rebels Mentality
The double victory at the Austrian International Shotokan Cup is no coincidence. It is the result of hard work, disciplined training and a club culture that promotes performance without neglecting togetherness. At the Rebels Karateclub, kumite is not just understood as a sporting competition, but as an expression of years of dedication to the art of Shotokan Karate.
Our training sessions are designed to push both beginners and competitive athletes to their limits. Anyone who wants to learn more about the philosophy and technique behind our success will find a comprehensive introduction on our What is Karate? page.
