Double Victory at the Austrian International Shotokan Cup 2025: Rebels Karateclub Dominates the Kumite Category

On May 24, 2025, the Rebels Karateclub made a statement at the Austrian International Shotokan Cup 2025 in St. Georgen am Attergau that will resonate in the Austrian karate scene for a long time: 1st and 2nd place in the Kumite Men Individual Open category went to our club. A double victory that impressively demonstrates the class and unwavering will to win of our athletes.

What a day for Rebels Karateclub! On May 3, 2025, Lorenz Hellmer proved at the Styrian Open in Graz that the Rebels spirit knows no bounds. He returned from one of Austria’s most prestigious international karate tournaments with a gold and a bronze medal – writing a new chapter in the still-young international history of our club.

On April 26, 2025, the Rebels Karateclub wrote a chapter of club history. At the Vienna Regional Championship 2025 – the very first tournament in the club’s young history – our athletes claimed three medals with three starters. A result that exceeded even the boldest expectations and shows the potential within this team.

For a club that was founded not long ago, participating in an official karate tournament in Vienna is already a big step. But the Rebels wanted more than just to be there. They wanted to make a statement – and that’s exactly what they did.

Self-Defense Workshop with System

On March 8, 2025, a special introductory workshop took place at the Ernst Happel Stadium in Vienna: “Self-Defense with System” with the experienced instructor Samir Sijamija. Organized in collaboration with the Association of Viennese Karate-Do Clubs, this karate workshop offered participants an intensive and practical introduction to the world of self-defense.

Self-Defense Vienna: What Participants Could Expect

The workshop was aimed at anyone who wanted to learn how to move safely and confidently in everyday situations. At the center was the concept of situational awareness – the ability to recognize dangers early, assess them correctly and respond appropriately. Real self-defense doesn’t begin with physical contact, but with perceiving and avoiding potential conflict situations.

On February 8, 2025, the time had come: right in the heart of Vienna, in the bustling Lugner City, the shopping center was transformed into a stage for the fascinating world of karate. Organized by the Association of Viennese Karate-Do Clubs, athletes from various clubs came together – including of course us from the Rebels Karateclub – to share our passion for Shotokan Karate with the public.

Autumn Gasshuku with Shihan Tatsuya Naka

A special training weekend with Shihan Tatsuya Naka (7th Dan, Shotokan Karate) and the Rebels Karateclub. The master instructor is known worldwide for his impressive technique, precise movements and the unique ability to convey the essence of Shotokan Karate.

The event focused on essential Budo principles with detailed kata analysis, practical application through partner exercises and emphasis on discipline, respect and harmony. Dr. Christian Osterbauer organized the gathering, which proved to be an inspiring experience demonstrating the tradition and depth of Shotokan Karate.

15th Karate Austria Day 2024 – New Participation Record

Over 200 participants from Austria and Germany attended the 15th Karate Austria Day at the Stadthalle Steyr – a new participation record! The two-day event offered 15 diverse training topics, including Kata & Bunkai, Kobudo (traditional weapons training), Kumite and Kyusho (vital point principles), as well as obstacle courses for children.

An experienced team led by Ferdi Yanardag and office secretary Helene Ely ensured smooth operations from registration to catering. On Saturday evening, a communal dinner was held where the “60th Anniversary Trailer of Karate Austria/OKB” was premiered.

Ruiji in Japan: A Semester Abroad Full of Karate and Culture

Ruiji spent a semester abroad in Tokyo at Waseda University, combining academic studies with elite karate training. The university is known for its highly professional karate team, which brings together top athletes from across the country for intensive training and knowledge exchange.

Beyond sports, Ruiji explored Tokyo’s cultural landscape – from historic temples like Senso-ji to modern technology districts. Training with top Japanese athletes provided mentoring and friendship opportunities.

The experience combined the best of both worlds: technical advancement in karate while fostering international connections and cultural understanding during his five-month stay.
