On March 8, 2025, a special introductory workshop took place at the Ernst Happel Stadium in Vienna: “Self-Defense with System” with the experienced instructor Samir Sijamija. Organized in collaboration with the Association of Viennese Karate-Do Clubs, this karate workshop offered participants an intensive and practical introduction to the world of self-defense.
Self-Defense Vienna: What Participants Could Expect
The workshop was aimed at anyone who wanted to learn how to move safely and confidently in everyday situations. At the center was the concept of situational awareness – the ability to recognize dangers early, assess them correctly and respond appropriately. Real self-defense doesn’t begin with physical contact, but with perceiving and avoiding potential conflict situations.
Practical Techniques for Real Situations
Samir Sijamija taught participants a structured system of effective defense techniques that are immediately applicable even without years of martial arts experience. These included:
- Distance control and body language: How the right posture and positioning can have a de-escalating effect from the outset.
- Blocking techniques and evasive movements: Fundamental defense techniques rooted in karate that can be intuitively recalled in stressful situations.
- Escape grips: Practical methods for freeing yourself from holds and bear hugs.
- Counter techniques: Targeted counterattacks that maximize impact with minimal force.
The exercises were conducted in partner work, so each technique could be practiced and internalized immediately. The atmosphere at the Ernst Happel Stadium was characterized by concentration, mutual respect and a healthy dose of fun in learning together.
The Connection Between Karate and Self-Defense
Shotokan Karate forms the foundation of many modern self-defense systems – and not without reason. The discipline trains not only physical abilities such as reaction speed, coordination and strength, but also promotes mental toughness, awareness and inner calm. It is precisely this combination that makes the difference in a real danger situation.
A self-defense course like this workshop impressively shows how the principles of karate can be translated into everyday-applicable techniques. Those who train regularly develop a natural sense of distance, timing and situationally appropriate action.
Why Self-Defense Training Is So Important
Self-defense is more than a collection of techniques. It builds self-confidence, sharpens awareness and provides a sense of security in daily life. Especially in a city like Vienna, it makes sense to familiarize yourself with the basics of self-defense – regardless of age, gender or fitness level.
