The New USI Semester Is Under Way: Karate for Students in Vienna
New semester, new lectures, new resolutions – and this time one that is actually fun: since 1 October 2026 our Shotokan Karate course at USI Wien has been running in its next round. After the successful launch in spring 2025, Rebels Karateclub has opened its dojo again this winter semester for all students and graduates who want to work out, learn something new and get to know a great community along the way. The first sessions have already taken place, but registration is still open.
Whether you have never stood on a karate mat or want to return after a break (9th to 3rd Kyu): this is the right place for you.

What Awaits You in the Course
We build your karate from the ground up: step by step, at your own pace and with plenty of practice. The sessions follow the three pillars of Shotokan Karate:
- Kihon – the basics. Stances, punches, kicks and blocking techniques. Focused repetition improves strength, coordination and concentration – the foundation for everything that follows.
- Kata – the art of forms. Set movement sequences against imaginary opponents. Every kata tells its own story and trains body and mind at the same time. Kata is meditation in motion.
- Kumite – partner training. Here you apply what you have learned with partners: timing, distance control, reaction. Clear rules and a supportive atmosphere let you progress safely.
The course follows the guidelines of the Austrian Karate Federation / Karate Austria (ÖKB). At the end of the semester you can take an official belt examination and take your first Kyu grade home with you.
Your Coach: Sensei Edvin Kuric
At USI you train with Edvin Kuric, chairman and head coach of the Rebels. Edvin has been on the mat for more than 25 years, is a 14-time Vienna state champion, a member of the Austrian national team and fought his way to 5th place for Austria at the WSKA World Championship 2025 in Cádiz. He is a twice state-certified coach (karate as well as athletics, fitness and coordination) and grassroots sports officer for Vienna.
Above all, he enjoys showing beginners the way into karate – without pressure, with clear explanations and a grin when the first mawashi-geri lands. Find out more about our team on the coaches page.
Why Karate Is the Perfect Balance to Studying
- Clear your head after the lecture hall. Ninety minutes of full focus on your body – deadlines and exam stress stay outside the door.
- Fitness without a gym. Karate trains strength, endurance, flexibility and coordination in every session. No equipment, no expensive membership.
- Confidence and self-defence. You learn to move safely, judge distance and stay calm when things get hectic.
- Community instead of going it alone. At the Rebels you train with people who are just as curious as you are. Many of our members started in the USI course and continue to train with the club today.
What You Need to Get Started
No prior experience, no equipment: comfortable sportswear is all you need for the first sessions. Training takes place barefoot on the mat. Everything else – from the karate uniform to dojo etiquette – we explain on site. Common questions about training, costs and equipment are answered in our FAQ.
