Kuric: Bronze in the Heaviest Weight Class

Edvin Kuric, chairman and head coach of Rebels Karateclub, fought his way to third place in Seniors Kumite +84 kg. Two weeks after taking gold in veteran kumite at the Irish Open in Dublin, he added another international medal in Nicosia β€” and at European Championship level, the more valuable one. At the ceremony he wore two bronze medals, one from the individual event and one from the team.

Hellmer Fights His Way to the Bronze-Medal Bout

Lorenz Hellmer drew one of the eventual finalists early in Seniors Kumite βˆ’75 kg β€” which is exactly what took him back into the competition through the repechage. From there he fought his way into the bronze-medal bout, where the last step to a medal was missing. Fifth at a European Championships for the reigning vice Austrian champion in the weight class β€” as it was for his team-mate Christian Kalcher, who also finished fifth in the same category.

Team Bronze: 2:0 Against Cyprus, 1:2 Against Wales

In Seniors Kumite Team, Austria lined up with Edvin Kuric, Lorenz Hellmer plus Lukas Arbeiter and Christian Kalcher of Karateclub FΓΌrstenfeld. On Tatami 2 the team beat hosts Cyprus Cyprus Wado Kai 2:0 in the quarter-final. In the semi-final against Wales Wado-Kai Wales the 1:2 left them one bout short of the final β€” a lost semi-final means bronze.

Arbeiter also took bronze in Seniors Kumite βˆ’84 kg, so two of the four team-mates stood on an individual podium as well. The squad was looked after by Edita Rados, a coach at Rebels Karateclub.
