WSKA World Championship 2025 – Arrival in Cadiz

The time has come – the Rebels Karateclub Wien has made the journey to Andalusia and is ready for the biggest stage in Shotokan karate: the WSKA World Championship 2025 in Cadiz, Spain. This is the first part of our three-part series about our World Championship adventure. What a journey lies ahead!

The Journey to the WSKA World Championship in Cadiz

Months of preparation, countless training sessions and a clear goal in sight – and now the day of departure has finally arrived. For Edvin Kuric and Lorenz Hellmer from Rebels Karateclub Wien, an adventure like no other begins. The two karateka represent not only our club, but all of Austria at the Karate World Championship in Cadiz.

The WSKA (World Shotokan Karate-Do Association) World Championship is the most important tournament in traditional Shotokan karate. Every two years, the best athletes from around the world meet here to compete in Kata and Kumite. Participation alone is an honor – but our Rebels aren’t just here to be present, they want to show what Austrian karate can achieve on the world stage.

Cadiz – A Worthy Stage for the Karate World Championship

The Andalusian port city of Cadiz, one of the oldest cities in Europe, provides the perfect setting for a tournament of this magnitude. The sprawling competition hall is impressive: numerous tatami areas, giant scoreboards and an atmosphere that you only experience at a world championship. Everywhere you see delegations in their national colors, hear languages from every continent and feel the tension and anticipation hanging in the air.

The scale of the event quickly becomes clear: in the Kumite Seniors Open class alone, there are 84 entries. 84 karateka from around the world, all with the same goal – the World Championship title. Every single fight will be a challenge at the highest level.

The Opening Ceremony – Goosebumps

The absolute highlight of the first day is the ceremonial opening ceremony of the WSKA World Championship 2025. During the Parade of Nations, our athletes proudly carry the Austrian flag into the hall – a moment that gets under your skin. The entire hall is bathed in a sea of flags and colors. Country after country marches in: Alemania, Austria, Belgica, Brasil and dozens more nations.

The signs with the country names are held high, the delegations wave, and the applause of the spectators echoes through the massive hall. It’s one of those moments when you realize: something big is happening here. This is where the world of Shotokan karate meets, united by the passion for this martial art.

For Edvin and Lorenz, it’s an emotional moment. All the early morning hours in training, the hard sparring sessions, the discipline and sacrifice – everything leads to this moment. The opening ceremony makes tangible what they’ve worked towards for months.

What’s at Stake

The WSKA World Championship in Cadiz is more than just a tournament. For Austrian kumite sport, it’s a rare opportunity to prove itself on the grandest stage. Successes at a world championship of this caliber are rare – which makes it all the more important that our athletes compete here with full commitment.

For anyone wondering what karate actually is – at an event like this, it becomes impressively visible: respect, discipline, technique and the unyielding will to give your best.

The tension is rising. The tatami mats are rolled out, the referees are ready, and our Rebels are full of energy and focus. Tomorrow the preliminary rounds begin – and then every second counts.
