USI Karate Course
大学スポーツ
Karate for students – from your very first session.
Together with the University Sports Institute Vienna we teach a karate course of our own for students and graduates. It is not a scaled-down club session: it is built from the ground up for people who have never stood in a dojo.
You need no experience, no particular fitness and no karate gi. You need a free Thursday evening and the willingness to try something new.

Just starting out? That is exactly what this course is for.
The most honest thing we can tell you: nobody can do anything on the first evening. That is normal, it is expected, and it is where everyone started once – your coaches included.
How your first evening goes
- 1
Arrive ten minutes early. Just say you are new; we are expecting you.
- 2
We greet each other as a group, then warm up at a pace everyone can follow.
- 3
You train in the beginners' group with your own guidance, not tagging along at the back of the line.
- 4
By the end you will know how a karate evening runs. Nothing more is expected of you on day one.
What to bring
- Comfortable sportswear – you do not need a karate gi to start
- A water bottle
- We train barefoot; no shoes needed on the mat
- No prior experience, no minimum fitness level, no upper age limit
What a session is made of
Shotokan karate rests on three pillars. Every session touches all three, in the proportion that matches where you are.
Kihon
Basics
Stance, posture, punch, block, kick. Everything starts here and everything comes back to it. You learn the movements one at a time, slowly and without a partner, until they stick.
Kata
Forms
Set sequences against imaginary opponents. Kata ties technique, breathing and rhythm together, and it is the part many people find unexpectedly meditative.
Kumite
Partner work
Controlled drills in pairs. Not fighting, not pressure: it is about distance, timing and reaction. You can move towards competition later if you want to. Nobody has to.
Why karate works alongside studying
An evening away from a screen
Ninety minutes in which you concentrate on one movement and nothing else. For many people that turns out to be the real reason they stay.
Training without equipment
Strength, stamina, mobility and coordination in one session – no machines, and no second membership somewhere else.
People who are also new
A semester course starts together. You are not the only one standing there for the first time, and that makes starting considerably easier.
Common questions from beginners
I have never done a martial art. Is that a problem?
No, quite the opposite. The course is designed for exactly this, and most people are standing on a mat for the first time on their first evening. There are no bad habits to unlearn.
Do I need to be fit?
No. Karate builds strength, stamina and mobility rather than requiring them. The warm-up is built so that everyone can go at their own pace.
Will I get hit?
No. Partner drills are controlled and follow clear rules. Shotokan karate is not full contact – technique counts, not force.
Who can take part?
Students and graduates of Vienna's universities and universities of applied sciences. Booking goes through the USI, not through us.
What does the course cost?
The USI sets the fee each semester. You will find the current one on the USI course page, where you also book.
Can I continue after the course?
Yes. Many people stay with the club after the semester and continue in our regular sessions. Just talk to us at the dojo.
Booking goes through the USI
The fee, the semester dates and the remaining places are all on the USI course page, and that is where you book. Places are limited and usually go quickly.
Still have a question about the training or the club? Write to us and we will answer personally.
Not a student any more? Our regular sessions are open to everyone – training times here.
